DIVA are here for you if you need more advice, Saoirse

We’re sure you’re already very familiar with the upcoming release of Ammonite, one of the most hotly anticipated LGBTQI films of 2020. Starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan as women who form a romantic bond in 1840s England, their performances have already placed the pair in a fierce Oscars race.

Kate Winslet plays the paleontologist, Mary Anning, and Saoirse Ronan is Charlotte, a wealthy younger woman grieving over having lost a baby. After Charlotte’s thoughtless husband, Roderick (James McArdle), pays the penniless Mary to watch over Charlotte while he goes abroad, they fall in love on the coastline as they hunt for fossils.

In a recent interview with Variety, Saoirse revealed that she consulted with her queer friends before tackling the role and asked them for some specialist advice.

Saoirse explained: “Any of the gay women that I have spoken to — and I think Kate did as well — before we started this, we were sort of asking them advice, just about different things that we as straight women maybe wouldn’t know about.”

“One thing that a lot of the gay friends of mine said was that they didn’t really feel like there were very many movies that actually represented the lesbian experience, and went into the intimacies of that — not just the sexual side of it, but just the relationship as a whole.”

She also added that her lesbian friends referenced Disobedience as one of the only films to represent the lesbian experience adequately. We can give you plenty more great LGBTQI film recommendations, don’t you worry Saoirse.

We can’t wait to see Ammonite on the big screen this November. 🎥

  1. Why the heck didn’t any of those lesbians tell her about “Good Times” on Netflix starring Mae Martin & the incredible Charlotte Ritchie? Because, they totally embody what lesbian theatre should be!
