If you’re anything like us here at DIVA, Nicola Adams’ appearing on Strictly Come Dancing as part of their first ever same-sex dance pairing at the weekend was enough to cure all the pain of 2020.
The day where LGBTQI individuals are represented on mainstream TV in such a bold way has been long-awaited and watching Nicola with her partner, Katya Jones, filled us with so much joy.
It’s now been revealed that following the opening episode on Saturday, Nicola Adams is the most talked about contestant. We can’t say we’re surprised!
However, it hasn’t all been positive. It was also revealed that Nicola is one of the contestants with the lowest amount of positive sentiment.
There’s plenty of controversy online from fans of the show and even some high-profile names. Ann Widdecombe told The Sunday Times: “I don’t think it is what viewers of Strictly, especially families, are looking for.”
Like the champ she is though, Nicola Adams has proved she has no time for the stream of homophobic comments that tried to bring her down.
“I’m expecting the same sort of thing I got with women’s boxing in the beginning – there will always be some resisters, but once they know you’re here to stay, they get used to it,” she told Radio Times.
“Women dance together all the time in nightclubs. Traditionally I guess men and women would dance together when they were courting, so the older generation have that in their heads.”
She added: “So someone’s going to comment on Twitter? It’s nothing, it won’t faze me at all.
“If they don’t like it, they’re going to have to deal with it or switch to another channel.”
We’re backing Nicola and Katya all the way to the final and hoping they get their hands on the Glitterball Trophy this year!
