After announcing this summer that Javicia Leslie would be starring in series of two of Batwoman, The CW have finally unveiled the first look of the new character in the full batsuit.
She’s clearly ready to stir up some trouble in Gotham City, and look absolutely gorgeous whilst doing so.
Replacing Ruby Rose, who left the show in May, Javicia’s character Ryan Wilder is a brand new addition to the Batwoman universe. She’s a “goofy and relatable” young woman who lives in her van before transforming into the badass superhero she was always meant to be.
According to The CW, although Ryan Wilder initially wears Kate Kane’s suit at the beginning of season two, she eventually redesigns the suit to symbolise that she’s carving out her own legacy as the badass, lesbian superhero.

Blackwoman, I mean Batwoman is here! 🦇 : : The new re-designed Batsuit for Ryan Wilder. The suit was redesigned by Maya Mani in collaboration with Javicia Leslie, and created by Ocean Drive Leather. The red wig was created by Janice Workman and the make-up was styled by Cory Roberts.
The new suit features a slightly different cowl, which showcases Ryan’s naturally curly red-streaked hair, as well as new red gauntlets over the forearms and shorter boots.
If that wasn’t already awesome enough, Javicia’s role also marks the first Black woman to play Batwoman on TV. In a recent statement, she explained how important it was that her Black identity was a part of the costume.
“I love the fact that Ryan is becoming her own Batwoman — it’s her style, her swag, and her moment! It was an honour to be able to collaborate with Caroline and Maya. I felt it was important that viewers could tell by the silhouette that Batwoman was a Black girl. With the form-fitting suit and beautiful Afro, we definitely nailed it!”
You can catch Javicia Leslie as the new Batwoman on The CW for season two in January 2021.
