There’s nothing more exciting than when one queer icon gushes over another queer icon. This time it’s the turn of the new Batwoman star, Javicia Leslie.
In a new interview with Attitude magazine, Javicia revealed that her queer role model is fellow actor Sarah Paulson.
“I love, love, love Sarah Paulson. If I had to say there was one who was not only my role model as an actress but my role model as an [LGBTQI] actress, I would say Sarah Paulson,” Javicia told the magazine.
We can’t say we’re surprised. Sarah Paulson has paved the way for so many queer individuals in the industry with her iconic queer roles in Carol, Ratched and American Horror Story.
When asked about her queer role models as a child, Javicia added that she couldn’t recall any actors who were out at the time, and that representation when she was growing up “sucked.”
Last July, she was cast as the lead character of the CW’s Batwoman, replacing Ruby Rose who played Kate Kane in the first season of the show.
Javicia is set on changing that for future Black queer women looking for representation in the media, telling the Los Angeles Times: “The first time I put the suit on, I immediately felt an immense amount of responsibility to save the world. Me, Javicia. Not even me as Ryan.”
According to Deadline, the new character Ryan Wilder “spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits” and “lives in her van with her plant” when the show picks up where season one left off.
She’s also been described as “a girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and also could kill you with her bare hands.”
Who else can’t even handle the excitement for season two now?
Season two of Batwoman will premiere on 17 January, and you can watch the trailer here.
