Actor Elliot Page and his wife Emma Portner have made the decision to separate after three years of marriage.
According to TMZ, Elliot Page filed documents in Manhattan seeking the dissolution of the pair’s marriage on Tuesday.
“After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce following our separation last summer,” the pair said in a joint statement.
They added: “We have the utmost respect for each other and remain close friends.”
Elliot came out as transgender in a heartfelt statement just two months ago. Emma supported him publicly at the time, writing a loving Instagram caption following his statement, where he announced he goes by the pronouns he/they.
“I am so proud of @elliotpage. Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world. I also ask for patience & privacy but that you join me in the fervent support of trans life every single day. Elliot’s existence is a gift in and of itself. Shine on sweet E. Love you so much,” Emma wrote alongside his statement.
Elliot further explained that he feels “overwhelming gratitude” for the friends who have supported him, and for finally being able to express his “authentic self.”
He then thanked the trans community for their “courage, generosity, and ceaselessly working to make this world a more inclusive and compassionate place.”
