We’ve been huge ARXX fans here at DIVA since the release of last year’s Call Me Crazy – a pop-soaked anthem with a powerful message – and we’ve been waiting eagerly for new music ever since.
Today, the Brighton-based pair are back with a banger which shows off their feisty side. Deep holds on to the catchy pop feeling we fell in love with, but adds in some more punk power. It’s an “empowering ode to leaving behind all your anxieties and getting what you want” and it shows off the confidence and energy ARXX have gained in recent years from earning themselves support slots with the likes of Dream Wife, Petrol Girls and The Hold Steady.
It’s this fierce attitude that makes them unlike any other bands on the alt-rock scene right now. Made up of Hanni Pidduck and Clara Townsend, ARXX’s sound showcases Hanni’s impressive vocal range – both raw and sweet simultaneously – and Clara’s immense pummelling beats. Deep adds an electronic-driven edge to their trademark passionate lyrics, proving that they’re constantly developing and finding new sonic areas to explore.
With infectious and sensual lyrics such as “I wanna be the ocean in between / I wanna touch you when I’m touching me / Come too far / Swum too deep,” Deep has showed us a whole new side to their sound and plays even further with expectations of what they should be as queer female artists.
Lending their expert hands to Deep, the song was produced by Steven Ansell and mastered by Katie Tavini, who has recently worked with Pillow Queens and Arlo Parks. Everything about this new single solidifies how far ARXX have come so quickly, and how bright the rest of 2021 is looking for their music.
Having been making music together since 2017, ARXX recently reached over one million streams on Spotify for their 2019 tune Iron Lung and have received airplay from BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6 and Radio X. They’re a band on the rise and leading the way for queer indie artists everywhere.
