“Rainbows are for life and not just June”

June 1 marks the start of Pride Month, four weeks of celebration, protest and learning to commemorate the Stonewall Riots, a series of demonstrations led by trans women of colour in New York in June 1969 and which are often considered to be the beginning of the modern Pride movement.

Increasingly, June has become a month in which brands and organisations show their support for the LGBTQI community by putting on special events, launching Pride-themed products and often donating a percentage of profits to worthwhile causes.

It’s great to have the Pride flag flying high, and it’s wonderful to see support for LGBTQI charities which have been particularly hard hit by Covid. But this year, the LGBTQI community have a message for those cynically looking to make a quick buck by splashing a rainbow on their logo for a couple of weeks without any meaningful engagement with LGBTQI identities, struggles, history or culture.

“Rainbows are for life and not just JUNE”
With visibility comes vulnerability…
“Love is love now pls buy from us”
You need to do more than just put a little glitter on it…
“Support local queers and small businesses!!!!”
Show your support for independent queer artists
Rainbow capitalism is trash
“Stonewall was a riot, not a rainbow”
We can see your hypocrisy showing
Take the time to get to know us, pls
Don’t shit on us all year round and think you can still come to the party
Be an ally to all 🏳️‍⚧️
“We can see beyond empty platitudes and flag waving”
An important reminder of the work to be done

Remember: rainbows are for life, not just for June.

DIVA magazine celebrates 27 years in print in 2021. If you like what we do, then get behind LGBTQI media and keep us going for another generation. Your support is invaluable.
