DIVA is a home for all LGBTQI women and non-binary people 🌈

In a disappointing moment for public service broadcasting, the BBC has published an article headlined, “We’re being pressured into sex by some trans women”. A tirade including transphobic ideology, the piece platforms the “concerns” of a minority of lesbians, citing voices from groups Lesbians At Ground Zero and Get The L Out.

The “survey” the article claims to analyse was completed by just 80 people. The piece has been subjected to intense discussion online, with objections from Ash Sarkar of Novara Media and Ryan John Butcher of Pink News.

DIVA publisher Linda Riley has also spoken out against the article, stating: “In all my years publishing DIVA Magazine, the leading and longest running magazine for LGBTQI women, I have never heard from a lesbian who says she has been pressurised into having sex with a trans woman. BBC News is reinforcing myths that are simply not true”.

Trans people are not only marginalised in media representation, but they are frequently subjected to harmful discourse. Stonewall reports that more than one in four young trans people have attempted suicide, and that two in five trans people have been attacked or threatened with violence in the last five years. With these statistics in mind, the BBC’s headline is an irresponsible attack on trans rights.

DIVA is a home for all LGBTQI women and non-binary people. Trans women are and always have been a part of our community, and that will never change. The LGBTQI community was built on the shoulders of trans women: without Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, the global LGBTQI community would look very different. The Stonewall riots might never have happened, and Pride would not exist. To all trans women today: we see you, we support you, and DIVA will continue to champion trans rights. Always. #LWithTheT.

DIVA magazine celebrates 27 years in print in 2021. If you like what we do, then get behind LGBTQI media and keep us going for another generation. Your support is invaluable.
