A drop-in social support group for LGBTQ+ people over 50, run by Opening Doors and London Friend, will be coming back from 24 November. This is an opportunity for people to find community and friends in the city. Opening Doors London is the UK’s biggest charity for LGBTQ+ people over 50. They provide activities, events, information and support services so that people can live full, vibrant and respected lives, as well as running an intergenerational volunteer programme.

Opening Doors London said: “Covid and lockdown had a significant impact on LGBTQ+ people over 50, many of whom experience higher levels of social isolation and loneliness than their straight peers.”

The charity said that the group is coming back because it was a “popular group where people can catch up with friends, make new ones and just relax and be themselves”.

London Friend is a charity which promotes health and wellbeing for LGBTQ+ people by offering individual and group support. It was established in 1972 and is the oldest charity for LGBTQ+ people in the UK.

London Friend said: “We are proud to have partnered with Opening Doors London to bring back this joint social support group. We are looking to celebrate our diverse community and acknowledge the immense contribution older LGBT+ people made towards advancing LGBT+ rights and equality.”

The two charities have joined together to bring back the popular drop-in support group for the over 50s.
The support group will be held every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, starting on 24 November, from 12:30 to 2:30 at 86 Caledonian Road. To find out more, email community@openingdoorslondon.org.uk.
